Alright so I'm wondering if this is possible. I'm using a 4gb flash drive and I was curious If you could set it up so that there would be encryption on the whole usb which would have to have the password entered before the os boots up. So essentially The flash drive would be encrypted and after password entry then tails would run. Sorry if my wording is poor on this. However thank you to anyone who can answer this!

Welcome to the wonderful world of bootstrapping! Which piece of software will be responsible to decrypt the operating system? Will it need an operating system itself? Where will it come from? Can you trust this piece of code?

So far, thinking about security threats, attack vectors and similar issues often leads one to think that having Tails unencrypted, but always in sight, is good enough. Others might disagree, but interesting solutions have yet to be found.

Building on comment 1: If we shipped a method for how to do this, chances are that we would be the only live distro using it, so your adversary could reasonably assume it was Tails any way. So we have two options:

  1. Use a method that will look like something commonly used in other live distros.
  2. It's up to all Tails users to invent their own method of setting this up.

At this stage the latter option is the only reasonable choice.
