If you do so it will trigger an imminent shutdown (and erasure of the system memory).

You can add "toram" on the boot command-line. The whole live system will be copied in RAM during boot. Then you will be able to remove your USB flash drive.

This only works properly if the computer has at least 3 GB of RAM.
